DIY Tooling: A Meditation on
Doing Things the Hard Way

Julie Stringham—Oregon Metro

As an application developer in the GIS space, I’ve spent much of my career balancing the efficiency of out-of-the-box app builders against the care and precision of crafting custom software from scratch. As an avid DIYer outside of work, I’ve found that while doing things yourself, or "the hard way," may not quickly produce a functional, scalable solution, it can help us build new skills and encourage more novel, creative, and personalized products.
On GIS Day, I thought it would be appropriate to share how my DIY tendencies have shaped my approach to GIS and software development, and how this novel perspective can help address the unique needs of smaller groups by stoking curiosity, creativity, and inclusivity -- all by embracing the inefficiency of the small scale.
Social Mixer | 8-9pm
Stick around after the keynote speaker for cake, a raffle, and more opportunities to mix with the local GIS community in this wonderful space.
About GIS Day
Since 1999, on the Wednesday of Geography Awareness Week, there has been an international recognition and celebration of Geography and GIS. On GIS Day, professionals and enthusiasts take time to show the world what GIS has done to make a difference in our society and in our daily lives.
Beginning in 2012, Portland has held an annual GIS Day extravaganza, a celebration of all things geospatial, a chance to make new professional connections and strengthen old ones. This event is made possible by a team of volunteers who coordinate inspiring speakers and activities with the backing of generous sponsors.
